Akashi Municipal Planetarium, Japan
At 12:00 noon on July 18, 2025, the Akashi Municipal Planetarium in Hyōgo Prefecture, Japan, officially opened the exhibition, marking the start of a five-year nationwide tour across seven cities to promote scientific collaboration between Taiwan and Japan.
Located precisely on the 135° east meridian, the Akashi Municipal Planetarium hosted its grand opening on July 18, 2025, with distinguished guests gathered on site. At exactly 12:00 noon Japan Standard Time, the ribbon-cutting ceremony (see photo) was held, symbolizing the official start of the exhibition within Japan’s time zone.
Attending guests included: Director Takeshi Inoue of the Akashi Municipal Planetarium; Director Katsumi Yoshiokaof the Osaka Science Museum; Director Wen-Shan Huang of Taiwan’s National Museum of Natural Science; Professor Toshiaki Shinkai of Osaka Institute of Technology, curator of the Taiwan–Japan Nationwide Touring Exhibition; Professor Jui-Kuang Lee of National Tsing Hua University; Taiwanese artist Kang Mu-Xiang; and Mr. Chen Tian-Long, Senior Advisor to the Office of the President of Taiwan and President of the Taiwan–Japan Friendship Association. Together, they marked a milestone in Taiwan–Japan exchange in science, culture, and art.
In 2015, humanity detected gravitational waves for the first time—ripples in spacetime generated by the merger of two black holes. The trajectory of these cosmic waves coincidentally mirrors the S-shaped curve of the “Ruyi”, a traditional symbol of good fortune. By chance, in the same year, Kang Mu-Xiang began working with steel cables, bending, stretching, and weaving them to embody this cosmic pulse as a tangible sculpture: Infinite Wish for Life (Ruyi Shengming). Through this work, Kang transforms a scientific phenomenon into a perceptible artistic language. By bridging science and art, the piece infuses Taiwan–Japan exchange with fresh energy.
In his heartfelt opening speech, Kang expressed:
“This time, I have brought Taiwan’s vitality to Japan, coinciding with the Expo period. I hope that visitors from all over the world can feel the emotional ties between Taiwan and Japan—like steel cables, stretching across the past, present, and future, resilient and unbreakable. I am especially grateful to Taiwanese enterprises Feng Hsin Steel Co., Ltd. and Ijysheng Bakery for supporting this exhibition.”
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the famous ‘Orbit Rangers’ Red Leader from the Akashi Planetarium made a special appearance in costume at the ribbon-cutting ceremony, bringing with him a spirit of courage to venture toward the universe.
